My Story
Meet the HENNABANGAH
About the Artist
My name is Dominica Marie Soliz, a native Houstonian, proud Brown business owner, and the artist behind DomSol Henna Creations. Established in 2004 as a sole proprietorship, I have been actively running my business in Spring Branch, where I have long called home.
Finding Henna and Healing
My journey into the world of henna began after leaving an abusive marriage in 2002. During a challenging period, I found support within the Third Ward subculture. While living with a friend who was already practicing henna in the community, I discovered an art form that helped me reconnect with myself. Henna quickly became a form of therapy—more powerful than I ever expected.
When my friend moved away in 2003, she left me with the vision of continuing the henna tradition. Through years of research, practice, and self-reflection, I found my unique style and artistic flow. Each piece became an energy exchange between me and my clients, influenced by intuition and a deepening sense of beauty and metaphysical connection.
From Side Hustle to Full-Time Artist
For many years, henna was my balancing force as I moved between jobs in the corporate and social sectors of Houston. It remained my side hustle until August 2013, when I decided to pursue henna artistry full time.
A few months after taking this leap, a woman contacted me about applying a henna crown for her 11-year-old niece, who had lost her hair to leukemia treatment. Moved by their story, I shared it on Facebook and was overwhelmed by offers to cover the cost. After the young girl received her crown, she was so touched that it sparked a lasting friendship between our families. This experience inspired me to offer free henna crowns to all chemo patients who wish to reconnect with their beauty. In August 2015, my journey was featured on Fox 26’s Feel Good Friday.
Growth and Community Impact
Following my television appearance, I opened my own dedicated workspace to create a more personal atmosphere for clients. Since 2015, I have worked throughout the NRG area and Spring Branch, always supported by my loyal clients. Like a henna mandala, every phase of my career has brought a unique experience and personal growth. I am deeply grateful to my clients—my “hennAddicts”—for their steadfast support.
October: A Month of Meaning
October marks three important occasions for me: my shop anniversary, Domestic Violence Awareness, and Cancer Awareness. October 23rd is now celebrated as #HennaHealsHouston Day in our city. Henna has been a source of healing for me as a survivor of domestic violence, restoring my spirit and sense of self-worth.
Throughout the year, I offer free henna crowns to chemo patients, but in October, I serve even more women, sharing energy and celebrating their strength. These crowns help women see their own natural beauty as they “Fight Like a Girl,” and I am honored to play a role in their journey.
The Power of Indigenous Artistic Expression
The most beautiful aspect of this work is witnessing how healing and therapy can arise from indigenous artistic traditions. Through henna, I have found purpose, direction, and a movement that connects and uplifts our community.
